A 28-year-old man has been charged and is in custody following two alleged abduction attempts near Stanley Park.

Nathaniel David Jessup has been charged with two counts of assault and one count of forcible confinement, according to Vancouver police.

Jessup was arrested after another attempted abduction of a young girl in Stanley Park Monday afternoon. He appeared in court on Tuesday morning.

The first attempted abduction of an eight-year-old girl happened on Sept. 4 on the Seawall at the north end of Denman Street.

On Monday, police said a family was in the area of Lost Lagoon when their two-year-old girl was grabbed by a man. The girl’s father confronted him, he let go of the girl and ran off.

Police were called and park rangers assisted in the search. They spotted the man in the area of Denman and Robson Street and with the help of a concerned citizen, the man was arrested in the 1800-block of Alberni Street.

Jessup, who has no fixed address, remains in custody. Police say they have had “dealings” with the man in the past and he is known to them. They will be talking to other police jurisdictions in the Lower Mainland and B.C. to see if he is known to them.

In a statement from Vancouver Park Board chair John Coupar, he said:

I would like to thank the Vancouver Police for their sustained efforts and extend my appreciation to the Vancouver Park Rangers who helped the police in their investigations and search. This was a difficult situation for the Vancouver Park Board, the community and visitors concerned about the safety of families visiting the park.
